Ophthalmology

On March 1st, 1979, the department was established with professor Park Yeong Gwan as the head of the department. As Kosin University's medical school was established, students were able to focus their studies on eye diseases, basic equipment, clinical education and treating patients. Starting from 1984, with professor Kim Sin Dong as the head professor, full scale research activities were performed and installation of latest equipment allowed a more scientific and effective diagnostics and treatments. With the installation of Argon-Krypton Laser, various retina diseases like diabetes retinopathy and chorioretinitis centralis, which were previously difficult to cure, became curable with the equipment. Remarkably, the first Corneal transplant operation(Dec. 1985) and radial keratotomy(surgery for correcting nearsighted. Jun. 1985) in Busan were performed at the department. On 1997, with the support from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, as part of the health and medical technology research and development program, the department has been performing various research on the 'diagnostics, treatment and prevention of infectionous corneitis. Currently the department of ophthalmology consists with 3 full-time professors and 8 doctors collaborating for treating patients, teaching students, researching, publishing articles at domestic and overseas symposiums and participating in social volunteering to improve the quality and quantity of the field.
